Entertaining Clean-Ups

Red wine spills  Removing a red wine stain from a tablecloth can be difficult, but it is not impossible.  First soak the wine stain with cool water for approximately 1/2 hour.  Then, blot the stain with dishwashing liquid and flush with cool running water.  If the stain is still present, perform the same technique using white vinegar.  If any stain is still present after using vinegar and rinsing well with cool water, use an appropriate bleach for the fabric and color of the tablecloth when washing in the hottest appropriate water temperature.  Then air dry and check for complete stain removal.  (Always remember to avoid heat drying until the stain is completely removed.)

If the stain removal is still not satisfactory, take the tablecloth to a professional cleaner and explain what procedure you have used.

Note:  Tablecloths are not required to have a care label, but if yours does have one, be sure to follow it.

Other beverage stains  Spilled coffee, soft drinks, tea or hot chocolate should be sponged immediately with cold water.  Then pretreat and launder in hottest water safe for the fabric, using appropriate bleach.

Candle Wax Drippings  Rub the wax with ice and carefully scrape off excess wax with a dull knife.  Then place the area between several layers of paper towels and press with a warm iron.  (The iron will soften the wax so it will transfer onto the towel.)  Repeat this until all of the waz build up is removed.  To prevent transfer back to the tablecloth, use a clean paper towel each time.  Once the wax is removed, there will be a residual stain.  Use an aerosol pretreat product, then launder in the hottest water safe for the fabric.  After laundering, air dry and check for complete stain removal.

Gravy, Grease and Meat Juice Scrape off as much as possible and soak in cold water.  Pretreat the remaining stain and launder in hottest water safe for the fabric.  Use appropriate bleach.  Hint:  Always use a liquid laundry detergent to remove greasy/oily stains.

Cranberry Sauce  Sponge promptly with cold water then wash in cool water, using a bleach which is appropriate for the fabric type.  If the stain remains, soak 30 minutes in an enzyme presoak and relaunder.

Oven Cleaning Clean oven spillovers as soon as possible for best results.  Be sure to wipe any excess grease or acid-based spills from the oven before running a self-clean cycle.  This minimizes excessive smoke or discoloration of the porcelain finish.  (Do not use a commercial oven cleaner in a self-clean oven.)

Porcelain Drip Bowls  You may use a conmercial oven cleaner to remove burnt on food soils from porcelain drip bowls.  Simply remove the bowls, carefully spray with cleaner and place in a plastic bag and allow to soak for several hours.  Wearing rubber gloves, remove from bag, wash, rinse and dry.

Glass-Ceramic Cooktops  If plastic or foods with a high sugar content melt onto the cooktop, they should be removed immediately to prevent permanent damage.  Scrape from the hot surface using a razor blade scraper or a wooden handled stainless steel spatula held carefully with a potholder.  Then clean any residue with cooktop cleaner when the surface has cooled.

Wait to clean up other spills as soon as the surface has cooled.  Gently scrub with cooktop cleaner using a clean cloth or paper towel.  If it is a stubborn spill, reapply the cleaner and cover the area with damp paper towels to keep the area moist.  Let stand for 30-45 minutes.  Then scrub to remove the remaining soil.  Do not use abrasive powders or pads as they may scratch the glass surface.
